Assessing the children at the end of the three-month trial using the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), the researchers report, \u201cCompared with the control group, the bumetanide group showed significant reduction in symptom severity, as indicated by both total CARS score and number of items assigned a score greater than or equal to 3 [a score indicating moderate abnormality].\u201d The researchers also found that the drug decreased the ratio of the GABA to glutamate in two key regions of the brain: the insular cortex (which plays a role in emotions, empathy, and self-awareness) and the visual cortex (which integrates and processes visual information).<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element in-legacy-container\" style=\"--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);\"><span class=\" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-1 hover-type-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Hand held out and open below image of brain. There is some evidence that ASD may result from altered brain development involving an excitatory-inhibitory imbalance, and the researchers say their findings provide support for the hypothesis that \u201cbumetanide can restore excitatory-inhibitory balance in the autistic brain, thereby promoting normal brain function and social emotional cognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers report that the drug was well tolerated, with no participants withdrawing from the trial due to adverse effects.
